Blogging Without Obligation - Remember This Button?

Remember this button?  Tiffini from Tart x made this button in 2007 and I thought it was time to bring it back.

Here's what she wrote way back when:

After coming across what seemed to be the 4000th or so post on someone’s blog starting with “I’m sorry I haven’t posted in awhile.” I decided it is time to rethink what makes a good blog and the expectations that have come to be part of it. I am thinking that no one should utter those words again . . .and with that thought I give you Blogging Without Obligation.

If you feel the same way feel free to grab the logo, make a logo or whatever you would like to do!

I release all the logos, thoughts and words mentioned here about this concept into the public domain. Take the idea and run with it. . .or walk away. It is all good.

  • Because you shouldn’t have to look at your blog like it is a treadmill.
  • Because its okay to just say what you have to say. If that makes for a long post, fine.  Short post, fine. Frequent post, fine. Infrequent post, fine.
  • Because its okay to not always be enthralled with the sound of your own typing.
  • Because sometimes less is more.
  • Because only blogging when you feel truly inspired keeps up the integrity of your blog.
  • Because they are probably not going to inscribe your stat, link and comment numbers on your tombstone.
  • Because for most of us blogging is just a hobby. A way to express yourself and connect with others. You should not have to apologize for lapses in posts. Just take a step back and enjoy life, not everything you do has to be “bloggable”.
  • Because if you blog without obligation you will naturally keep your blog around longer, because it won’t be a chore. Plus, just think you will be doing your part to eradicate post pollution. One post at a time. . .

I was not blogging in 2007 - but I am thrilled to read this post! Thank you so VERY much for giving me permission to take a break from blogging when needed - or demanded by life.

AMEN!!!! Yes -- I totally agree!
I totally agree, I post when I have something to say but I do feel like my followers may be interested in where I am etc if i'm not blogging and networking. I'm more interested in commenting and being a part then people having something to read.

This is a great reminder though because blogging is not a job, even though sometimes I wished I did get paid for it, lol

I know, Marce, wouldn't it be great if we all got paid for doing this?

I love the camaraderie that interacting with bloggers brings to my life, but when it starts to feel like a competition to see how many followers one can get or how many posts one can do in a week or how many books one can read...then it's time to re-evaluate. I don't need more guilt in my life; I just need love and friends :)
Great post ! What an awesome reminder :) I got caught up feeling blue when I saw I only had a few followers compared to others that are in the 1,000 !!! It really shouldn't matter how many are following us, I blog as a way to express what I've done for the day, or anything I think my sister whose also a blogger would like to see since she lives in a different state. I'm glad we crossed paths though Lynne, I truly enjoy reading yours posts !! Such a great reminder !

Dude! I totally never thought of that. I am so going to inscribe my stats on my tombstone! Oh, wait, your point was the complete opposite of what I just said right? Can I still do that anyway? Here lies Gwen, loving mother of Chew & Digest Books and foster mother of the greatest, albeit least intelligent, dog in the world Murphy.

I wonder if they charge by the letter? He isn't really the greatest dog in the world; I mean Lassie he ain't.

I go in waves with blogging without obligation. There are times of stress and times of tough beans. As usual, life is always a work in progress. That is the great part and much better than something that happens while I am busy blogging:)

I came to your blog through Molly's post on Sunday and just wanted to stop by and say thanks and well done.

I still love blogging and, yes, adore comments - especially those rare times when a dialogue between commenters takes place - but, I have learned to take it all in stride and remember that this should be fun. I have times when my fingers have a life of their own and won't stop and then there are times when my mind is blank. I've learned it is okay, but, your button and words remind me to stop before I apologize for not posting, posting too much, yadayadayada . . . much thanks.

Great post! I used to feel bad when I could not get to update my blog but not really any more. :) Sometimes I like to be "plugged" and lately it seems I may walk to my laptop to see whats happening, and instead walk right past it and reach for a book instead. How old school of me....LOL :)

Yesterday I didn't log on to my computer until after 4 pm and that felt GOOD.
Thought we all needed a reminder that we blog for fun :) We deal with enough pressures in life, right?
Amen to this! I've been facing my own "blogging crisis" and decided to make some changes to how I do things. This was a perfect reminder for me!

Thanks for the reminder! I've been busy with other stuff, and blogging is a hobby after all! :) It's fun, but sometimes real life takes over...

I decided to consciously look at my blog as a hobby last month when life got too busy for me and I took a two-week break. The break was fun and it gave me a healthier perspective. Now I only blog when I want to.

Great post! So glad you remembered this button, as it can get stressful feeling that you need to post every, single day. I actually felt guilty that I hadn't posted in a week, so will try to get my perspective back! :)
