I Wonder...

Do you mind if anyone borrows an idea from your blog to put on theirs?

Not really. I guess it depends. I get lots of ideas about design and such from others, but I don't take anything that people have written. There's a difference between inspiration and plagiarism. Good discussion question.
It does depend on what it is.If it's something fairly general I wouldn't mind but I would hope they'd take the time to leave a comment as well.
I think the best and most polite route is to let the person know you're borrowing it just to make sure it's ok with them. I've had people ask me if they could copy certain formats for posts before, and I thought it was polite, but really don't know if I would have noticed. I agree with Mrs. Deraps comment about the difference between inspiration and plagiarism.

Oh, and I finally replied to your comment about my rainbow of books post. Sorry it took me so long - I'm really far behind with everything blog related right now. http://athomewithbooks.blogspot.com/2010/06/saturday-snapshot-june-5.html

I wouldn't mind but it's nice to give a heads up to the blogger as well as a little credit on your blog.
On another note, how do you like reading on the iPad? I see the book you're reading on it now is a big book. I really like reading big books on my Kindle. Makes the physical aspect go away for me.
Have a great week!

Mary: I love reading a big book on my iPad. I've actually only been reading this one book when I use the elliptical machine at the gym. It's like my "gym book." :) And I'm enjoying this book so much that it motivates me to go to the gym. Sort of. Hehe

I see it as a complement, really. But you're right, it depends what it is. If it's a sidebar widget or a rating scale idea, no big deal. Who's to say they got it from you. Now if they stole my header...harumpf! They'd be dead. Hehe
I don't have a problem with it, but it would be nice to be credited with the idea in some way. If it is just a widget or something, no biggie.

Now if the idea takes off on the other blog big time and makes that person famous, well, that would mean that I would have to send my dog over there for a little discussion:)

If they want to borrow Six Sentence Saturday which is mine or the Fitness Friday posts that I do I wouldn't mind as long as they gave me credit and asked me first. I sure as heck wouldn't say no. I don't mind if they use a snippet of a review as long as they credit it back to me.

BTW..I can't find your email address anywhere so I'm letting you know that Life in Spite of Me is yours and I just need to address!! Thanks!!
I really would not mind; it's a compliment IMO, as long as they did not post my review as theirs...LOL
Not if they ask first or link to me ... I guess it depends on what they are "borrowing"!!!

Nothing new to add to the discussion as I have the same thoughts.
Don't think there is anything wrong with it, so long as proper credit is given. Widgets are no big deal, but anything else, at least shoot them a quick email.

Great question. I really don't mind sharing but sure appreciate the email request first. I am willing to help when I can because I was a new blogger once and needed all the ideas I could get and others were very kind to me. :)

Hi Lynne,

If it's just an 'idea' - like a post about how to use Google Analytics or even a design idea, I really don't mind. Posts about using Google Analytics or laying out your blog are hardly original, even if our words are original when we write about them.

What would irk my is if someone cut and paste an entire post of mine and claimed it as their own, unless I'd said: ok, please share far and wide, or there had been some communication between us about this.

I am flattered when someone asks me if they could re-post something I've written - I've never said no and I've even been paid for my articles

I frequently find inspiration for new articles in my readers' comments and I always ask them if they would mind if I used their comments. Thus, I would expect the same courtesy.

I hope you're enjoying Life of Pi BTW. I read this book at a very low point in my life it made me escape and feel human again for a while.

<DIV>Amanda, thanks for your thoughts. You've got a great blog, by the way, with well written articles and posts. </DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV>Glad you stopped!</DIV> <DIV></DIV> <DIV>And yes I am enjoying Life of Pi, but it took about 51 pages for me to really get into it.

I don't.. so long as I get credited. Like who inspired you and so on.. When I come across interesting posts that I would love to write about, I make a note in my online diary, along with who the source is. I could be writing about the topic months later, so I like to remember who inspired me. Plus.. it's a lot of blog love, why hold it back. :o)
