Armchair BEA!

We may not be there in person, but we'll be there in SPIRIT! Emily's Reading Room is hosting this event during the actual BEA May 25-27. If you aren't one of the lucky ones soon to be traipsing around New York, schmoozing with authors and famous book bloggers at the - as Emily put it - "book prom," let's at least have our own fun.

I'll be hosting a giveaway, so even if you don't participate in this event be sure to come back. I've got THREE books from Simon and Schuster to hand out. Shhh...Don't tell anyone, but it's international. Oh my gosh, did I really say that?

Review: A Reliable Wife - and Giveaway!

A Reliable Wife

by Robert Goolrick

My Synopsis

A novel set in the early 1900s about a wealthy man who places an ad in a Chicago newspaper looking for a "reliable wife." A woman responds, saying she is honest and simple, and it turns out she is not. She wants his money and plans to kill him for it. She goes to great lengths to deceive him, but in the end, he is the one with the upper hand.

My Thoughts

The description on the back of the book is as simple as my synopsis above and left me hanging and wanting more. It's hard to say much about the story without giving away the end. I can say that I enjoyed it and found it passionate, suspenseful and complex. The story panned out in a surprising way and kept me turning the pages until the juicy end. Just remember, you don't really know someone until money comes into play.

Do I Recommend? If you are looking for a quick, easy to read novel with a twist, yes!

My Rating: 4/5

I'm giving this book away! Click here for details. Ends February 15th.

Good luck (and P.S.: I just finished A Reliable Wife and loved it.)

A Reliable Wife (trade paperback)
Synopsis from Barnes and Noble:

He placed a notice in a Chicago paper, an advertisement for "a reliable wife." She responded, saying that she was "a simple, honest woman." She was, of course, anything but honest, and the only simple thing about her was her single-minded determination to marry this man and then kill him, slowly and carefully, leaving her a wealthy widow, able to take care of the one she truly loved.

What Catherine Land did not realize was that the enigmatic and lonely Ralph Truitt had a plan of his own. And what neither anticipated was that they would fall so completely in love.

Filled with unforgettable characters, and shimmering with color and atmosphere, A Reliable Wife is an enthralling tale of love and madness, of longing and murder.

The Unnamed (hardcover)
Synopsis from Barnes and Noble:

Joshua Ferris' debut novel Then We Came to the End was both heralded by critics and a New York Times bestseller, and marked the arrival of a startlingly talented young writer. With THE UNNAMED, Ferris imagines the collision between one man's free will and the forces of nature that are bigger than any of us.

Tim Farnsworth walks. He walks out of meetings and out of bed. He walks in sweltering heat and numbing cold. He will walk without stopping until he falls asleep, wherever he is. This curious affliction has baffled medical experts around the globe—and come perilously close to ruining what should be a happy life. Tim has a loving family, a successful law career and a beautiful suburban home, all of which he maintains spectacularly well until his feet start moving again.

What drives a man to stay in a marriage, in a job? What forces him away? Is love or conscience enough to overcome the darker, stronger urges of the natural world? THE UNNAMED is a deeply felt, luminous novel about modern life, ancient yearnings, and the power of human understanding.
