Review: Without a Word: How a Boy's Unspoken Love Changed Everything

Title:  Without a Word:  How a Boy's Unspoken Love Changed Everything

Author:  Jill Kelly

Genre:  Memoir/Christian Biography (September 2010)

About:  Football star Jim Kelly and his wife Jill find out their infant son has a rare, fatal illness and is expected to survive for only 14 months. This is the story of how Hunter Kelly, who succumbed to Krabbe Leukodystrophy at the age of 8, changed their lives forever.

Thoughts:  Absolutely loved this story. Jilly Kelly does a fabulous job of opening her heart, her life, her marriage, her struggles, and her reality to readers. Several pages of pictures are included, which is always my favorite part. I'm a visual person, so to be able to read the story and see the pictures made it all the more heartbreaking and inspirational. The book is faith-based, and I enjoyed reading about Jim Kelly's transformation from philanderer to faithful servant.

Source:  Library

Why I Chose:  This was everything I love in a book all wrapped in one - medical-related, sad but inspirational, lots of pictures, memoir, sports.

Recommend?  Yes, definitely.

Rating: 5/5

Great review. I was surprised to learn when Jim gave his life to God. I thought it was much earlier.

Me too. Jill's faith was so strong already, but he needed to really hit bottom before he turned his life around.
Yet another depressing story line ... I should have known you would read (and love) this book!

Ha ha! I know, surprising, huh.
I think this one sounds like a moving read. I do enjoy seeing how families react to certain tragedies and turn them into a families strength!

Yeah, but I feel like I'm one of the few who can handle such depressing story lines. (See Jenners' comment). I suppose it's because I'm able to see the positive aspects of them, like you said.
This one sounds a bit too sad for me.
I've never seen this book before now, but would definitely like to read it. It's going on my WL!!
That's such a sad story and I applaud the Kellys for how well they handled it. I hope sharing Hunter's story will help other people.
